Thoughts from the Lectionary: Trinity Sunday
From the Gospel Lesson: St. John 3:1-15
Vss. 13-15 13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Here Christ is speaking to a teacher of the Jews. The man has come to him in secret and has just been told that unless one is born again by the Spirit of God that they are incapable of perceiving the Kingdom of God. Jesus goes on to say that the one that came down from Heaven must be lifted up as Moses lifted the Brazen Serpent in the wilderness that all who looked upon it in faith would be saved from the vexation of the fiery serpents. Just as that focus of faith was given to the Israelites in the wilderness, so the Son of Man would be lifted up that all who look to Him in faith will be delivered from perishing eternally and live forever and ever.
In the fullness of time Christ was lifted up on the Cross at Golgotha so that we can be born again. Those who are born again by the power of the Holy Spirit begin to see the present reality of the Kingdom of God and grow from strength to strength until at last they attain eternal life through Christ in whom they have believed.
