Thoughts from the Lectionary for the Third Sunday in Advent
From the Gospel Lesson: St. Matthew 11:2 -10
Here in Scripture we see that, after a time of training His disciples, Christ departs to minister in the cities roundabout the area. As he is doing so His cousin John the Baptist (who has heard of Christ’s works from prison) sends out two messengers to Jesus to inquire whether or not He is indeed the messiah. John does so because he is discouraged. He heralded Christ’s appearance warning the people to repent and flee from the wrath to come. He pointed them to Christ as the deliverer. But now in prison, finds himself discouraged and confused. So much so he questions his own ministry wondering if the man he heralded was indeed the one. Christ answers the messengers, telling them to take word back to John that he had not preached in vain and that all of the prophesied works that pointed to Christ were being performed as evidence that indeed Messiah had come.
We Christians are, as John was in this passage often taken by doubts, discouragement, and depression. John turned to Christ in his despair when he didn’t understand the world and events around him and was given the encouraging answer that indeed Christ has come. In this season of Advent let us take our concerns to Christ who’s incarnation we contemplate at this time, knowing that He will not just give us an answer, but that He IS the answer.
